Teale Phelps Bondaroff
Biography
Teale is an independent researcher and community organizer primarily working with the BC Humanist Association and OceansAsia, where he leads volunteer teams to produce investigative reports that have a real-world impact on issues such as marine wildlife crime, plastic pollution, municipal policy, and separation of religion and government.
Teale co-founded and serves as the Chair of AccessBC, a reproductive justice advocacy organization that successfully campaigned for free prescription contraception here in BC and beyond. He is a volunteer with Greater Victoria Placemaking Network where he channels his passion for literacy, community, and libraries into mapping and supporting our region’s growing little free library network.
Teale is completing his first term on Saanich council, where he has been a strong voice for housing affordability, road safety, access to primary care, climate action, environmental protection, and accessibility. He is seeking re-election to Saanich Council, and to represent the community on the CRD.
Reason for running
They gave me a constant example of what it looks like to connect with people and lift up others, and instilled in me a profound desire to make the world a better place.
We live in a time of extraordinary change, with interconnected crises like climate change, economic inequality, the spread of mis- and disinformation, and the rise of facism in America. It’s easy to fall into cynicism, conspiracy theories, or wish for the return of an imagined golden past, but these approaches will only exacerbate the challenges we face. Instead, we must press forward and fight for a better world; a more caring, equitable, ecologically conscious world, where human dignity and well-being are a priority.
For the past twenty years, I have been active in electoral politics at all levels and have fought for progressive causes, and all with the goal of advancing social democracy and dismantling systems of oppression. I have found that politics is the perfect place to entwine my passions for research, policy, and conversation, and I am seeking another term on Saanich Council to continue putting my energy towards the betterment of my community.
